BAM & Aurum: visualization of energy flows on site with up-to-date data
How do you make complex energy data understandable for everyone on site? For BAM, Aurum developed a energy flow visualization based on existing Haystack data. The result: immediate insight into energy flows on a large display, without additional hardware or changes to the infrastructure.
BAM’s Challenge
BAM develops and delivers sustainable buildings and infrastructure. As part of this mission, BAM also wants to engage the people who use these buildings and environments every day—helping them understand what sustainability means in practice and what impact it has.
For a specific location, BAM wanted to display energy flows within the building on a large screen. The goal was to visualize this information in a reliable and accessible way, using the existing Haystack data structure and without making major changes to the infrastructure. The visualization needed to be intuitive for both technical and non-technical users and suitable for continuous on-site display.
Aurum’s Approach
To achieve this, BAM engaged Aurum. After defining the project objectives, Aurum started with a design phase in which several visualization concepts were developed. These designs were specifically created for large-screen use and focused on visualizing energy flows rather than individual data points.
This design phase included the following steps:
- Developing multiple visualization concepts
- Organizing feedback sessions to refine design choices
- Further development and refinement of the selected design
- Translating the final design into a web-based dashboard
By involving BAM actively from the beginning, the result was a solution that is technically sound and aligned with on-site practical use.
The Aurum Solution
Aurum delivered a browser-based dashboard that visualizes current energy flows using BAM’s existing Haystack data.
The solution consists of:
- A clear visualization of energy flows, meters, and major consumers
- A web application that can easily be opened in any browser, giving BAM full flexibility in how and where the dashboard is displayed
- A direct data connection to the existing SkySpark Haystack environment, without requiring additional hardware or infrastructure from Aurum
The dashboard was designed as a clear and accessible visualization that provides immediate insight into what is happening, enabling on-site users to quickly understand where energy is being used.
