Case Meppel Energie – Scalable remote reading of heat meters
How do you ensure reliable and stable remote reading of heat meters within a small district heating network, managed by a small team? For Meppel Energie, Aurum delivers a solution that enables phased scaling from a few installations to full network coverage, while maintaining clear and easy oversight.
The Challenge of Meppel Energie
Meppel Energie operates a relatively small district heating network, managed by a compact team. This creates the need for a solution that allows the network to be managed in a simple and structured way.
At the same time, the challenge lies in reliably unlocking measurement data from the field, often from locations that are difficult to access.
In practice, this means:
• Digitally connecting over 400 homes within the network
• Ensuring continuous availability of reliable measurement data
• Maintaining clear visibility over the network and quickly identifying issues
The key question: how do you design a data chain that works from the very first connection and supports future growth?
The Objectives
Meppel Energie defined clear objectives:
• Reliable and up to date remote reading of heat meters
• Insight into key parameters such as energy consumption, flow and temperatures
• A solution that is immediately deployable
• Minimal complexity in management and implementation
• A solid foundation for monitoring, billing and further digitalization
• Simple and efficient issue detection
Aurum’s Approach
Aurum takes an approach that focuses not just on the meter, but on the entire end to end data chain.
The focus was on:
• Rapidly making the first installations operational
• Implementing a standardized and scalable solution
• Ensuring data quality from source to platform
• Providing clear network visibility, enabling issues to be identified with just a few clicks and analyzed further
The Aurum Solution
For Meppel Energie, Aurum delivers a solution based on EnergyGrip, enabling reliable collection, processing and availability of heat meter data.
The solution includes:
• Smart heat meters that capture data such as volume, supply and return temperatures, flow and energy
• Communication via narrowband IoT and LTE M, ensuring reliable connectivity even in hard to reach locations
• A robust data chain in which measurement data is centrally available
• A platform where data can be used for monitoring, analysis and billing
The implementation starts with the current 4 installations and is gradually expanded to 120 connections and ultimately 424 connections across the full network.
The Results
With this approach, Meppel Energie benefits from:
• A reliable and scalable data infrastructure for heat meters
• Direct insight into energy consumption and system performance
• Efficient onboarding of new connections
• A solid foundation for billing and operational management
• The ability for a small team to proactively identify and resolve issues for customers
This case demonstrates that successful digitalization of district heating networks starts with a strong foundation: a well designed data chain that works from day one.
